In order for the fight against epidemics to be successful, it was not enough to restore local hospitals; it was necessary to send epidemic detachments with this central government to places where the number of diseases was especially large, and to open barracks for infectious patients.
During this time, the Union acted restlessly at the suggestion and direction of the military and civilian authorities.
For example, after Przemysl was taken, the Military House instructed the Union to examine some villages of the Przemysl bridle and take measures against the development of epidemics. At the beginning of April 5, the Military Sanitary Inspector of Galishchi asked to establish cholera barracks in Senyavz and Pruchnik, and | Later, already during the evacuation of Galisha, the Governor-General proposed to establish a hospital for cholera patients in Lviv. The order was immediately carried out: a barrack quickly adapted for this purpose could, in the same laziness, receive 186 suspicious patients. by cholera
Even earlier, barracks for cholera patients were opened in Khirov and Rudki and for typhoid patients in Sambir, Zlochevz and Khorostkiv. In addition, other measures were taken against the spread of epidemic diseases: with this goal, the Union formed several smallpox vaccination units and in some points opened an outpatient clinic for military officials and the local population. |
Finally, during the same period, the Union began to set up bacteriological laboratories. How important this was in the beginning can be judged by the fact that the first laboratory, opened in Przemysl, in 42 days of its work made 1007 tests, of which 640 for cholera. The second laboratory, set up in Sokal, at the end of May managed to work only fifteen days and during this time made 107 studied, most of which were typhus.
Medical and sanitary work was also carried out at the stage points, the equipment of which the All-Russian Zemsky Union offered to undertake even before the formation of the Committee in Galishchi. It was decided to arrange a larger quarters at the stages, in which soldiers and prisoners could rest and spend the night, a kitchen, supply warehouses, and a reception area for 10-15 people.
` Passing soldiers and prisoners receive tea and sugar, a two-course meal and dinner. The products are purchased at the expense of the Military House, which also sends the lower personnel necessary for the work, and the employees establish the quality of the food and ensure the cleanliness of the kitchen, etc. for the general routine for nutrition. Medical personnel examine those passing through the stages and separate those who are sick. Thus, transit points play the role of filters that detain patients and prevent epidemics from penetrating deep into the country.
The stages themselves must be properly equipped in sanitary terms. With this purpose, latrines are disinfected, wells are installed and cleanliness is maintained in the premises where soldiers and soldiers stay. Finally, in some places baths are set up with laundry facilities.
The first stage was equipped at the end of January, and in Ma the Union already served 25 stage points.
The rapid growth of the Union's institutions has caused an increase in the activity of warehouses: the Committee establishes new warehouses and increases the size of those that were founded earlier,
The Lviv warehouse is of particular importance; At first it accommodated 10-15 carriages, later its capacity reached 80-100 carriages. Lvov becomes a large rear base, which feeds a large number of front-line warehouses located along the branches of the railway tracks. At the Lvov warehouse, as an independent institution, a warehouse for pharmaceutical goods began to operate, which subsequently reached a significant size.
The management of this Otlolom was entrusted to gr. R. R. Kapnista.
The following figures show how Otdzl's operations gradually developed.
In February, the department's turnover was 11,000 poods.
In MaB and during the evacuation of Galisha, Otdvla’s turnover naturally decreased, but still reached 222,000 poods.
Despite; that sending Union cargo to the front was carried out with great difficulty, Otdfl managed to send about 150,000 pounds of cargo to Galishia in the first three months of its existence.
Almost simultaneously with the establishment of the Procurement Department, an enterprise arose, which subsequently grew to a very significant size.
On February 14, the Committee launched a special Otdzl for collecting and processing the skins of livestock killed at the front.
