“He is entrusted to the protection of God and to your guardianship,” he says, “and I betray him who seduces him from the true path.”

Then he instructed his son at all times, commanding him to serve the fatherland with all his might, to guard it like a god’s storehouse, to shed his blood for it, with compassion, and not to violate loyalty to the Sovereign. Then he passed on the signs of hetman's dignity to his son. The Cossacks, according to their custom, covered the hetman with hats and banners. Old Khmelnitsy did not live long after this.

On July 27 of the same year, a cannon fired. to the people about the death of their liberator. Everyone mourned him like their own father; the hetman's funeral was sad and solemn, troops and crowds of people saw off the body: the glorious hetman to his last refuge. He was buried in the stone church of Subbotov.

Six years later, during the war, the Poles took over. Subbotov, dug up the bones of Khmelnytskyi and betrayed them. I'll scold you. 'So great was the hatred of the Poles for this man.

The fall of the Zaporozhye Community. Zadunayene Cossacks.

“They spent the day and nothing, And the people of Transporbz left Veleyuy meadow and Mother Sich, They took Malir with them to God, And they took nothing else.

And to the Crimea to Khan, they carried it to the new mountain—Zaporbzhe.”

(Shevchenko.)

Throughout the entire ten-year war of Khmelnitsky, the Cossacks took part in the main battles, making up the selected and best army. After the annexation of Ukraine to Moscow, as is known, a war began with the Poles, Turks and Tatars; The Cossacks mainly fought with the latter. In general, for the Cossacks, the entire second half of the 18th century passed in non-. intermittent battles in the Crimea with the Tatars and at sea with the Turks.

In 1709, the Swedish king Charles HP invaded Russia, Ukraine. Hetman Ivan Mazepa,

whom Karl promised to make a real king of Ukraine; betrayed his king Peter the Great and went over to the side of Charles. Mazepa thought that all of Malorosel would follow his primfr, but his calculations turned out to be wrong: the kram of a small number of his close associates, mostly nobles and Cossacks, no one else pestered him. The Cossacks with their koshev Konstantin Gormenko pestered Karl because they were afraid that the sovereign hand of the great Peter would put an end to their willfulness: by the time described, the power of Rosai was already so great that Peter besieged and took the city of Azov, which belonged to the Turks, the Crimea was quickly falling into decay, and therefore there was no special benefit for Roseash in the small forces of the Cossacks It was no longer there, besides, they, having taken away their main goal - protecting the borders of the Russian kingdom - began to support those who expressed displeasure at the new order introduced to the Ukraine by Tsar Peter. Having learned about the betrayal, the tsar ordered the destruction of Sich; in the same 1709, Colonels Yakovlev and Galagan with a strong detachment approached the Chertomlytsky Sich and, despite the desperate defense of the Cossacks remaining in the Sich, took it. The house was completely ruined; many people were killed by Russian troops, many were taken into captivity. For treason, the Cossacks were put on rafts and sent down the Dnefipr to the fear of others. 100 Zaporozhye cannons, obtained with their blood in battles, fell into the hands of the winners. The surviving Cossacks, among several thousand people, fled on boats and across the steppe to the borders of the Crimean Khan, where they surrendered to him as allegiance. The Khan granted them a horsetail, a mace, etc., and settled Kamenk in the village; but Russian troops drove them out of here too. The object was moved further south to the Aleshki tract, near the Russian Federation of Dniir, to the Crimea skoy sides. During the absence of most of the Cossacks, who went with the Crimean Khan on a campaign against his rebellious subjects, this Sich was taken by the Cossacks, loyal to Tsar Peter, destroyed, plundered and burned; again a lot of people were beaten and killed.
