Thus, at present, in the entire indicated space of the Ratsevsky swamps, there are three continuous swamps.

ny, sandy, hundreds of black soil strips in 1-1 ver. width, which diverge from the village. Ratsevo in different directions: 1) on the village. Adamovka (past the village of Kazharki) 2) in a northern direction to the forester’s house and 3) along the road from Ratsevo to the village of Kolontaev. The rest of the swampy areas are a quagmire, covered with “potholes” of varying sizes (this is what round, deep holes filled with water are called here; they are also called “kolbanki”) and even lakes and overgrown with reeds, aspen and vines.

During dry times, these swamps can be crossed only by single people and cattle along certain paths; in winter, when it’s cold, they can drive carts; It is then that they take hay and reeds from the floodplains, cut in the summer season.

The origin of the Ratsevsky marshes can be attributed to a very distant time, when the rivers of Dnfpr and Tyasmin were larger, and their floods extended far beyond the current floodplains. In several places the swamps are re-watered by streams with a slow flow.

The swampy area along the left bank of Tyasmin below the village of Andrusovka to Vtrovka, as well as to the south of the Gushchevskaya state dacha, has the same character as the Ratsevsk swamp; the latter are characterized by complete obstruction.

3) Between Nabutov and Drabovka to the Rossi valley and level. Staroe Borye to the river valleys. Olishanka is approached by the Dizhevoye swamp, up to 2 versts wide.

The branch of this swamp, let's call it the Imshan swamp, begins almost opposite the village. Sakhnovki and passes by the village. Drabanovka. Its width is up to 2'[» versts. The swamps are overgrown with reeds and bushes and are considered impassable.

Lakes.

There are generally few lakes in the area. They are all small in size and have no military significance. The largest of them, lake Bloye, located at the southern 3rd edge of cape Bylozerye (10 verstakh to the north of Sm-Bly) has an oval shape (the major axis from the north-3rd to the south-east is 800 n., the small axis from the north-east to the south-3rd is 550 fathoms).

The lake lies in a swampy depression, overgrown with reeds and algae. The depth of the lake varies from one arsh. up to one fathom, muddy bottom. The water in the lakes is muddy and unsuitable for drinking. Horses are reluctant to drink water from the lake.

The lakes along the shore of the Dnipro have, for the most part, an oblong shape, stretched in the direction of the flow of this river, which directly indicates their origin from the drying up of the branches and bays of the Dnipro.

The depth of these lakes is often significant - 7-10 feet. The bottom and shores are mostly sandy and hard; The water is fresh and overgrown with algae. There are many stavs formed from damming rivers in the region; they are indicated in the description of the river.

In total, there are 699,727 acres under forest in the southern part, or 11.9°/o of the entire surface.

The districts richest in forests are: Cherkasy (25.1°/o), Zhytomyr (21.1°/o), and the most abundant is Litinsky (1,150).

As for the location of forests, it must be noted that the villages are scattered throughout the region, for the most part in the form of small village dachas, and their number decreases with movement from the north to the south. Its largest strips are located in Vinnitsa, Tarashchansky and Cherkasy UBZDs, as well as along the bank of the Dn5pra to Cape Gripolye and from Kanev to Cherkassy and along the bank of the river. Bug and tributaries of the Di$str. In general, LBSA ‘in paradise, every year everything

—— 114 are decreasing. Only in the districts of Tarashchansky and Cherkasy, where the forests belong partly to the treasury, partly to the specific department and partly to large owners, are they kept inviolable. The main species growing in the forests of the region are: oak, hornbeam, birch, maple and pine. The trees, for the most part, have dense undergrowth, which greatly impedes movement. There is very little dead wood in the forests, because it is readily picked up by the peasants.

Among the large owners, in udBlah and at the treasury, the personnel are predominantly combatants, while among the small owners, partly combatant and partly woodworking.

The main reason for the destruction of forests should be considered the large number of sugar factories in the area.

Obpiy review of paths.

The southern part of the region has three types of communication routes: ordinary, railway and water.
