HISTORICAL AND STATISTICAL ESSAY.

The history of Southern Rus' is, one might say, the history of the struggle of the Osfdlogo population with the steppe, nomadic; This struggle was waged continuously in the course of a long series of VFKs, and its results were expressed in the constant fluctuation of the borders of the Osfli settlements: Rus' weakened, the nomads grew stronger - and the border strip was empty, the Osfli settlements were moving to the north; on the contrary, Rus' strengthened, the Turks weakened—and the small population moved south, seizing steppe spaces for pastures and fields. Already in the memory of history, the southern Russian border has undergone many such, very sharp, fluctuations: the border, for example, of the EKYUevsky land, about which we have heard more, then moved towards the flow of the Stugna River, then crossed the river. Ros, in the basins of the Bug and lower Dniera. This struggle of the cultural population with the semi-wild steppe, which was waged with extreme tension of the people and amazing resilience on the part of Rus', had a heavy impact on its political and cultural development, but it constitutes a great cultural merit and the history of this struggle is of deep interest.
