Brief sketch of the history of Field Engineer

Nago did in Russia, since the time of Yaroslav

(1025) until the establishment of the Field Engineering Troops (1702).

Gorodniks, bridge workers, Yartul squad and vicious masters. Byforeign engineers appear in Russia - Rozmysly. An attempt at theorhetic education in engineering and its consequences until the era of Peter the Great. |

The formation of a special type of weapon, now known under the name of Field Engineering Troops, began in the reign of Peter the Great, in 1702.

1025 Although until that time there were no special Engineering troops, properly organized and trained in their specialties,

oh ity in peacetime, but in the chronicles already, from the time of Yaroslav, we find it indicated that, in addition to the army, to which he entrusted the construction of fortified buildings, there was a special group of people, under the name: “10spring, bridge and vicious craftsmen \).”

“Gorodniki” corresponded to the significance of the current military Engineers. Their duty was to build city walls. Each yurodnik received a set salary, provisions and fodder for his work. So, for the beginning of the work, the gardener took “Kuna” (with our money 311/> kopecks of hard coins), when completing the task of “Nomtu” (with our money 39/1 kopecks of hard count coins) and, in addition, every week, during the work, 7 grains, 7 harvests of millet, 7 lumps of oats for 4 horses and 10 lukon for malt, and money for meat, fish and water (or drink).

The duties of the bridge workers were very similar to some of the duties of the current Sappers. They were entrusted with the arrangement of various types of crossings. Each bridge worker received “a naatu for ten lacs of work”, and when repairing an old bridge, “a kuna for every piece of labor or cutting into the water.” In addition to the necessary food, he received, for two horses, 31/5 onions of oats per week?). One horse was intended for him, and the other for his youth or assistant, with whom he always rode.

Later, to monitor bridge work and its producers, i.e., bridge workers, special bailiffs were appointed, who were called “bridge workers.” They probably existed before, but only under a different name, although nothing is mentioned in the chronicles.

Our chronicles do not mention anything from when the idea of timely removal of obstacles on the path of troops began to enter into the considerations of Russian military commanders.
