This important drawback was eliminated only in 1757, with the establishment of the Engineer Regiment. However, one could not expect any significant improvements in practical education before 1756. The people who were at the head of this matter treated it passively and, apparently, did not realize that the key to the successful development of field engineering and the education of engineering troops does not lie in studying
1) The plan of 1740 (Ing. Architect. Drawing. G. Design 12885), depicting an artillery camp near Blgorod, shows two batteries, one for 2 guns, the other for 1 mortar. It must be assumed that they were erected with the purpose of assigning lower ranks of artillery to the construction of batteries. Practical siege work carried out in 1747 at the Riga fortress consisted of the construction of four batteries and the conduct of zigzag approaches against the earthen rampart, which was a training ground. In 1750, a training ground was built in St. Petersburg, on the Vyborg side, against which the students of the engineering and artillery schools conducted a regular gradual attack, and the engineers were also engaged in arming the batteries. (Art magazine 1862 No. 12). Practical mine work carried out in 1758 under training rampart on the Vyborg side consisted of several close-knit forges under an earthen rampart. (Arch. V.T. depot, No. 26396). (Mat. for East. Engineering. Art. in Russia ©. Laskovsky, part Sh. 1865).
E. in intricately woven theoretical courses, and teaching them through practical means.
Count Shuvalov, from the very first days of his management of the engineering department, was the first to pay serious attention to the introduction of technical equipment, which could serve to distribute useful information between officers and improve the practical education of engineering troops.
o At the same time, Count Shuvalov, foreseeing that all the measures introduced by him to spread practical education could remain unfulfilled or take on a different character than he would like to give them, was the first to resort to establishing more strict control in this branch of education.,
It was established that all teams, upon completion of summer work, should have exams. To better understand the nature and characteristics of this type of test, I provide below an extract on this issue:
“When the work comes to an end, Tofa, the great engineer (commander of the engineering team in the fortress) every month or two, you can choose to discuss and discuss science, and lead your subcommanders, such as: officers, conductors and mining sergeants, to call upon you to call on you to do so and with5 these sciences draw up and present for solution such tasks, which in design and theory, force and the best known concept and brought to the perfection of science can be done, Iago then: about the ways of sweeping across the surface of fortification buildings in different locations, about strengthening the foundations and elevating and laying the pillars according to the circumstances of the ruins; about different methods for turnover and attack to close people and artillery ve lityakh; about different things to remove in practice 4 about how to find a way to quickly remove it; about different deductions that happen in 5 different circumstances in the damage; about the best ways to carry out work and about other sciences related to fortification.”
“These and other similar orders are given to the commander (i.e., the chief engineer in the city) to represent the assembly, according to their ranks, to each one separately, and to give time for reasoning; On the other hand, whoever has anything in the art of science is doubtful, then you can politely present it to the evil commander, for according to the art of seven presentations, you reasoned about the commands, not to harm and if you are not satisfied with the evil commands, you can present them according to the commands, and all such asking ot every 10 days, in the prescribed list of whose task was and who was responsible, and in what way, in plans and in 5 profiles, with subsuming in pikh samoy, zlavnokomanduyuiiy to represent the command in 1005 one at a time each, or who is more from 1b himself, chapo to the best to imagine, about seven to give ia vomo and all ae trad-
"Submit each item for review directly to the department commander."
Both field engineers and mining officers, conductors and sergeants serving with the troops had to undergo similar examinations.
Among the tests of the soldiers who were in the fortresses should also be included the following example logs of attack and defense, which they had to compile at the “distance of 790,000 in front of the fortress ord” assigned to each of them.
Whether these testing rules were implemented is not clear from the archives.
