In releasing my work into the world, I consider it necessary to say a few words about it.

I cannot help but draw attention to the criticism that the proposed “Essays on the history of the Vrivichi and Dregovichi lands” were written by me back in 1888. It is impossible not to admit that it is time to begin publishing them now. that they are in many respects far from being sufficient; But everyone knows how difficult it is to fundamentally erase what has once been written, how many painful difficulties such work presents. Therefore, I only dared to make minor changes to Vneve.

Reasons holding me back. From the publication of this work, more than two years, unfortunately, are valid to this day. I was held back by the fact that some questions of our ancient history, fundamentally, had not yet been developed, were unclear, and precisely those questions that were closely related to the history of the present North-Western region; These are the questions about the Scandinavian sagas, in which the names of Polotsk and Smolensk are repeatedly mentioned as a source for our history, about the relationship of the Krivichi to the Novgorod Slavs, about the Krivichi colonization of the Ugric and Lithuanian tribes in the region, etc.; finally, to understand the internal life of the primitive era, the archaeological work done to date is far from sufficient.

coppies. In view of the fact that the outlined questions of the history of the Yorivichs and Dregovichs, as well as others closely connected with them, require more careful and complete treatment, we decided to publish at the present time only part of the work we proposed, hoping to complete the rest in a short time. That is why the promises on page 62 to consider the issue of colonization remained unfulfilled.

We limit the proposed work to the framework of the HP of the city, strictly adhering to two main tasks: to consider the geographical position of the Turov, Smolensk and Polotsk principalities in political terms and to trace the course of the political life of the named principalities, as far as possible, both according to our chronicle data.
