It was not the custom for zeys to be territorial members of any tribe. The Smolensk volost was not for long in an uncontrolled position under the power of three princes. Under Vladimir Monomakh, we see that she was in close connection with the Shereyaslav principality, in which Monomakh’s father Vsevolol reigned. Moreover, Turov, it seems, also temporarily fell under Vsevolod’s power. Precisely, after expelling Izyaslav from Eva, Svyatoslav, becoming the prince of Evev, left Chernigov behind him. Undoubtedly, he had to somehow reward his brother Vsevolod; he, in all likelihood, got the Turov princess. So, Vladimir Vsevolodovich went to war for the Turov volost with the Poles and, having spent the winter in Turov, in the spring he went to his father in Pereyaslavl, from there again to Turov 59). When Svyatoslav, Prince of Kevsk, died, Vsevolod made peace with elder brother, exile Izyaslav, and translated by his son) | his Vladimir from Turov, as the ruler of Izyaelavov, at the former |
so in Smolensk (in 1077 61):
Turov probably remained with Izyaslav, for whom he was important as a direct path for relations with Poland. In return for Turov, Vsevolod received Chernihiv, and the Svyatoslavich brothers, Oleg and David, were declared outcasts and deprived of their father's table. Vyacheslav's son Boris, who appeared around this time in Rus', suffered the same fate. The young outcasts did not think of giving up their right to govern Russian cities. They

appeared with a large army of steppe inhabitants and in 1078 occupied the Chernigov volost. However. in the same year, the united militia of the senior princes defeated the outcasts near Chernigov, and Boris Vyacheslavich and Grand Duke Izyaslav were gone: Vsevolod occupied the Kevsyu table, as a result of which a new change in the princes in the estates took place. Yaropolk, the youngest son of Izyaslav, was given the Turov domain, but only in addition to Volyn 62), Vladimir Monomakh_moved from Smolensk to Chernigov.
Thus Monomakh occupied two tables; at least it is known that when Vseslav Polotsyu attacked Smolensk, Vladimir chased after him with the Chernigovites. From this we can conclude that Vladimir did not cease to be the Prince of Smolensk, as indicated in one later source$8:
Turov lost its significance under Vsevolod. This prince did not have connections with the West, like Izyaslav, and therefore Turov was not important to him. He gave it to Yaropolk, with whom he was, apparently, very friendly at first. So Yaropolk once spent Easter with him. Moreover, when he was kicked out of the Udfla by his nephews Rostislavich, Vsevolod immediately helped his nephew Yaropolk, sending his son Vladimir with the troops, who restored him to his former table 65). However, I agree that this did not last very long. Yaropolk decided to rebel against his uncle: some kind of misunderstanding occurred between them, about which the photo is silent; she explains the matter that Yaropolk listened to the evil Soviets 66). Vladimir Monomakh, sent by Vsevolod, occupied Vladimir Volynsy and captured the mother and wife of Yaropolk there, who, with one, brought the enemy closer to Poland. However, he will soon

8) Strykowski spoke at length about this. One of Vsevolod’s close associates decided to send his Vladimir to Yaropolk (probably some misunderstanding or suspicion). The same comrade persuades Yaropolk to flee to Poland, saying: “You are dissatisfied with your comrades and the army, but rush to Poland as soon as Father Izyaslav ordered,” pp. 171-172. If this is so, then obviously there is some kind of intrigue hidden here, as often happened in those days,

made peace with the Grand Duke and again took his table. Some time later, when he was on his way to Evenigorod, he was killed by some Nerdyanets. The reason for the murder is unknown, but the killer was sorry for Rurik Rostislavich, which aroused strong suspicion on the latter (1087 67).
