To the east, the borders of the Smolensk region reached the upper reaches of the Volga near the city of Verzhavsk (n. Rzhev, Tver province), from where they crossed to the upper reaches of the Protva “6), the Moscow River, on the tributary of which Iskani there was a city of the same name; the bay headed south, approximately along the river Vor%, which flows into the Yukhnovsky district of the Ugra river, along which the border stretched to its upper reaches, located in the Smolensk region 47). The upper reaches of the Ugra reach the rivers Degnz and Bolv, or ObolvV, on which we see the Smolensk city of Obol, which, of course, was the extreme point to the southeast. Snotsoti to the Desna; along the Desna, perhaps to the last river of Gabnya in the Oryol province, near the border of the Smolensk province. On this border we meet the city of Pashchyn, now the village of Roslavl, on the borders of the same river. Desna and Voronitsy, south of Roslavl, from where the border turned southwest to Sozha.
Turning to the data of modern geographical nomenclature, we see on this border: Pogorfloye Settlement in Tver province. east of Zubtsov, Buborodokz on Gzhati in Smol. lips and a few others; Dalfe in the Ugra region: p. Rubizhino, on the border with Moekovek. lips to the north from Yukhnov, Gorodishche on Ugrz, especially - Abroad, between Vyazma and Dorogobuzh, not far from the gran. the last one, Gorodechno, near the upper reaches of the Bolva in Kaluzhsk. lips., Gorodokz to the top. Ugri, in the southern corner of Dorogobuzhsk. u., Raduli, reminiscent of the neighboring Radimichi, the village of Roslavlsky u., south of Patsyn - Gorodeshch st. on the railway dor. from Bryansk to Roslavl.
The southern border of the Smolensk prince, starting in the southern part of Roslavl district. also captured the middle part of Klimovichsk. u. Mogil. gub., where we see the Smolensk city_Zara and the village. Dudins

On this border we see Propoisk, Rogachevsky district. on the Sozh, the ancient Prupoi and to the south of it Chichersk, at the confluence of the Chichera and the Sozha, a Radimichey city belonging to the Chernigov principality. Along the river Dobrych, the southern Smolensk line headed towards the Dneir, which it adjoined at Luchin, below Rogachev. A little higher here was Smolensk. the village of Vet, between Novo-Bykhov and Rogachev, and to the south the city of Luchin.
Turning then to the data of modern geographical nomenclature, we see Gorodeshch Klimovichesk on this border. u. southwest of Cape Shumyach, directly south of Zhuravich on the Dobrycha tributary, west of it, at the upper reaches of Dobrycha Vrivsk, south of the post-day G040dokz, zatfm Gorod to the southeast. ‘from Rogachev and n%cat. etc.
Of the neighboring Chernihiv border towns on this border we will point out: Lobinitsya on Protve and Nerinsk, Vorotnitsi at the confluence of the Zhizdra in the Ugra, Mosalsk (n. at the city of Kal. Gubernia), Vshchizh on the Desn above Bryansk, not far from it Vorobeyna and Ormina on Iput and, finally, Chichersk on Sozh" 45).
