Therefore, it seems to us that it is quite natural to consider Vladimir the immediate successor to Vseslav on the Polotsk table. In fact,” the chronicle mentions Vseslav in the last day in 1180, and Henry Latvian says that Meinard “asserba Tsadie Psepya a gese \Uo9etago 4e R]oseke, si Guuopez apis rasat looking for zoueeeane” 8) eyeseb. This was around 1186. Another question is to whom this Vladimir belonged to the Polotsk princes.

Concluding the story about the external history of the Polotsk region, it is impossible not to mention Tatishchev’s information about Vladimir Minsky. The essence of Tatishchev's story is as follows. In 1182, Vasilko Drogitsy “quarreled” with Vladimir Minsky, calling Sholyakov and Mazovshan for help and went to Breet; On the Bug the opponents met, Vladimir lost the battle and went to Minsk, and Vasilko captured Brest; but “afraid to be here himself, he left his wife’s brother in the Poles and returned to Drogichin himself.” Vladimir Volodarovich again gathered an army, received help from the princes of Polotsk, took Brest, beat Mazovshan, again went beyond the Bug and attacked Vasilko on the Bug river. The last loser was defeated and retired to Leshko, but then returned again and with the help of the Poles forced him (Vladimir) “leaving Podlanie, the Vasilkov region, to go to Brest beyond the Bug River” 7). In our opinion, there can be no doubt that the name of Minsk appeared here purely by chance ®).

From Tatishchev’s story it is clear that Vladimir owned Brest, that this city, however, did not belong to him as a radical udVl, but was only an appendage to the ud$ that Tatishchev calls Minsky. The fight against Bug by one of the Glzbovich Minekikhs, their campaigns to Brest, Dorogichin are very doubtful, even impossible: the Minsk prince with a small army from

23) Artsybashev already remarked regarding this account of Tatishchev: “We did not dare to introduce this translated passage into our presentation without the exact chronicle words,” [, 228, note. 1407.

<for your small lot it would be difficult to make huge transitions to Dorogichin and generally in Podlasha, with which Polotsk is not. connected by not a single event of the previous time, it would have been necessary to pass through the Pinsy and Yatvyazhe lands, etc. Further, neither Tatishchev nor the event described by him indicates in a single word that there is any connection with the lands of Polotsk. In addition, in Tatishchev’s broadcasts, small details are mixed up, as Mr. Andruyashev already pointed out, it is believed that it is impossible to apply this completely to Drogichin ^°) Thus, the name of Minsk came by accident and is a distorted name of some city, which inaccuracies are very often found in Tatishchev. The closest thing to assume is that Tatishchev should be written here instead of Pinsk, Minsk 30). At the very beginning of the 13th century. Vladimir appears in Pinsk, the echoes of whose struggle with Vasilko reached Tatishchev.

Thus, we repeat, in our opinion, the immediate successor at the Polotsk headquarters of Vseslav Vasilkovich is Vladimir, whom the Russians do not know in chronicles, but who was well known to Heinrich Latvian, which is quite natural, the welfare of Polotsk interests from the interests of the rest of the Russian lands.

We examined only the history of the external relations of the Polotsk land to Smolensk and Novgorod for the last half of the 19th century. Her external relationships are limited to these two; on the other hand, from the west, from the beginning of the 80s, the relationship of the Polotsk region to the Lithuanians and Germans began to become clearer. But the relationship of both t and drumya in HP Art. are still too insignificant, not clear, they can only be understood by comparing them with important facts of subsequent times, which is not part of our task. But now let’s turn to the internal history of Polotsk, consider the currents of regional life, about which our sources give us at least some hints.

In the development of regional life in Polotsk, two main trends are emerging - the development of urban areas and the development of suburbs

become more independent. The facts relating to both issues are extremely scarce; most of them have already been indicated by us, and therefore now we will have to look again. them from the internal life of the region.
