rolls in constant relations, that these people, at least in their own right, were subordinate to the Polotsk PRINCE, that Krivichi colonists lived among them. This confused Russian-Lithuanian population, obviously, did not want to submit to the new prince, and taking advantage of the confusion that had set in, they sought to isolate themselves. It is not without probability that we can also assume that here, to the outlying lands; part of Polotsk, dissatisfied with the new order, supporters of the Rogvolodovichs and independence, and, most likely, with their princes, from whom not all were expelled and whom the popular voice put forward again at the first opportunity, fucked. The attempt to retain the Polotsk region for the Monomakhovichs was unsuccessful and failed because internal reasons - the population itself and external circumstances - prevented this. After the death of Mstislav, frequent movements of the Monomakhovichs began from the table to the table, turmoil during the unsuccessful reign of Yaropolk. But later we will see that the same struggle of the Monomakhovichs with Polotsk continued only on other grounds and that Monomakh found a reliable successor in his grandson Rostislav.

We examined the initial era of the history of the Smolensk, Turov and Polotsk principalities. Two different trends are noticeable in it: the desire of the first Yonovsky princes to centralize the Russians of the earth in their power, and then, when Rus' was sufficiently united, a movement opposite to the first, decentralized. We know almost no details about the era when Russian lands were formed under the rule of the Kev prince; however, as far as can be judged from fragmentary excerpts, this unification did not always occur peacefully, as indicated by the struggle of St. Vladimir. with Polotsk, with the Radimichs, etc., although most of the tribes, having failed to create a strong state structure, under the influence of external circumstances, submitted voluntarily. Then a reverse trend begins in the history of Rus'—the desire of individual ethnographic groups to decentralize, to establish

lenshu-‘have an independent state structure. The Turov principality did not manage to separate itself until quite late; Smolensk land was allocated gradually, without fighting YuKev; Since the time of Prince Rostislav Mstislavich, it has become a completely independent land with its own separate Rostislavich land. On the contrary, the Polotsk land endured a centuries-long struggle with Yuev for independence.

At the beginning of Prince Mstislav Vladimirovich in Kev%, we see on the Turovsky pillar of his younger brother Vyacheslav, and on Smolensky - his son Rostislav.

It is unknown when Prince Turovsyu was born; from his previous life we know that already in 1096 he went to the aid of his brother Mstislav against the outcast Oleg 1); then in 1107 he takes part in the campaign of the princes against the Polovtsians °), and a little later we meet him already on the Smolensk table (from 1113 v. 3). Through. three years_ 'after this, he, by order of his father Monomakh, made a campaign to the Danube with the voivode 9th Ratiborich "). The reason for the campaign was Monomakh's desire to support the claim to the Byzantine throne of the brother of Tsarevich Leon, Vasish., Monomakh's grandson. The war was unsuccessful and Vyacheslav, having retreated from Dorostol, returned back 5). That's all, what we know about Vyacheslav before he took over the Turov table; when he took this position after that, the chronicles are silent, but during Metislav’s campaign against the Polotsk region in 1128, Vyacheslav was already the Prince of Turov 6).

The princess from Smolensk should almost be attributed to the time of Metislav’s occupation of the Yume table and the subsequent change of tables, i.e., to 1125. In the same year, the occupation of the Smolensk table by Rostislav Mstislavich probably also dates back to this last one, since we meet with the Smolensk regiment in the mentioned campaign against Polotsk

It must be noted that the Turov land at that time consisted of two udfls - Turov proper and Klecheky, where Vyacheslav Yaroslavich, the grandson of Svyatopolk, reigned. How long this udfl existed is unknown, because the princely chronicles no longer mention it.
